Why Use Ice Baths?

Ice baths are commonly used by many athletes around the world as a recovery protocol to aid in reducing soreness, inflammation and flush lactic acid – minimising fatigue and maximising performance.

How Do Ice Baths Work?

The cold water causes blood vessels to tighten or constrict, sending blood closer to your core and heart to maintain warmth. Circulation is then accelerated causing accelerated muscle recovery. Research shows a cascade of health benefits including:

Hormone balance

Ice baths increase the release of norepinephrine, a hormone that works to calm you down, to the blood. It also affects your mood, vigilance, focus, and attention—for the better!

Improved sleep

The calming benefits of hormone regulation also extend to improved sleep, with many users experiencing deeper, less interrupted sleep.

Endorphin production

There’s no denying an ice bath is a jolt to your system. The jolt is actually endorphins (happy hormones), which are released to increase alertness, clarity, and energy levels. This effect leads to feelings of well-being and optimism.

Reduced inflammation

By bringing the temperature of an area of the body down, you speed up the delivery of warmer, freshly oxygenated blood to that area. And that speeds up recovery time of any injuries or general muscle soreness.
