What is Metcon?
Metabolic Conditioning (MetCon) is a scientifically designed program to boost your metabolism, drop body fat, increase your strength, improve conditioning and make your body function well in your daily life.
Our MetCon group classes usually feature one of two popular workout formats, AMRAP (as many reps or rounds as possible) and EMOM (every min on the min). These workouts use a variety of functional movements (squats, push-ups, lunges) performed in sequence, interspersed with high-intensity cardio intervals, which mean sessions are always different.
Benefits of Metcon
MetCon is often touted as one of the most effective formats to burn fat, and it is, but what’s often left out is that MetCon is also great for building muscle and increasing strength. How? Once you start making your way through a few MetCon workouts, look to increase your weights next time, gradually adding more weight over time will quickly increase overall strength.
When most people think of training to improve their conditioning (fitness), they think of conditioning the cardiovascular system to increase the transport of blood to the working muscles. Metabolic conditioning is the other side of the coin – conditioning the muscles to better use what’s getting delivered to them by improving the efficiency of the different metabolic pathways. The cardiovascular and metabolic conditioning benefits from MetCon workouts far exceed traditional “cardio” activities.
This style of training creates a metabolic disturbance, which increases your heart and respiratory rate as your body looks to return to a state of balance. Occurring during a MetCon session, but also well after. An increased metabolic rate or ‘after-burn effect’ can last anywhere from 48-72 hours, depending on several factors, and can increase your metabolism by between 10-25% over that period.
